“Chilean Art travels to Crete”

Revealing connections that transcend distance

In the summer of 1999, Minos Beach art hotel welcomed Chilean art to its gardens and interiors. The exhibition, entitled “Chilean Art travels to Crete”, brought eight artists to Agios Nikolaos in a collage of sculpture, painting, photography, theatre, poetry and song.

The purpose of the event was to show how close the cultural, political and human relations can be of countries that are far apart geographically. The venture was highly successful. The bringing together of Kazantzakis and Neruda and the juxtaposition of Cretan couplets with Chilean and Latin American ballads demonstrated to Greeks, Chileans and others taking part in the events that distance is an obstacle can easily be overcome.

The cultural wealth of Crete was significantly enhanced: the permanent collection of the G & A Mamidakis Foundation, which is displayed in the sculpture park of the hotel, received sculptures from two famous artists: “Offering to Poseidon” by Cecilia Campus and “Dialogue” by Lily Gazafulic.
