Journeys in time and space

The desire to promote links and encourage dialogue between the arts, the environment and people is at the heart of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation.

One of the manifestations of this desire is the organisation of exhibitions of diverse size and content, from the multifaceted exhibition of sculpture, painting, photography, theatre and song, “Chilean art travels to Crete”, to exhibitions of artistic photography that cast a black and white, nostalgic eye over the Crete of past decades.

Blue Nights 2019

Cinema arrived in Greece, as elsewhere in Europe, in 1896. In the summer of 1900, the first regular screenings began at the coffee shops on Syntagma Square. This was just the beginning of open-air cinema in Greece. The 1960s was a golden era, while during the 1970s, there were more than 500 openair cinemas in Athens. 4 Cents: On Show For 500 Years – Georgia Kotretsos

The site-specific installation 4 Cents: On Show For 500 Years (2018) by Georgia Kotretsos (b.1978) addresses global environmental issues such as the plastic waste pollution in the sea. With the use of liquid glass and resin technique, Kotretsos converts real plastic bags into compact objects, which then pass through a process of copper-galvanoplasty, paint and polishing. “Sea to Shore Stories” Modern Art Exhibition

The beauty of nature, the hug of the sea, the rejuvening seaside are some of the simple, but important elements of life that becomes inspiration for artistic creation. As they were the inspiration for the modern art exhibition "Sea to Shore Stories" by Ioannidis Kostas; a multi-faceted art project that it took place in July of 2016, at the Minos Beach art hotel in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, under the curation of Katerina Gregou.

“Agios Nikolaos – Places and People in the 1960s”

In the summer of 2007, Minos Beach art hotel hosted an exhibition of unpublished photographs by Dimitri Papadimos, entitled “Agios Nikolaos – Places and People in the 1960s”. This major artistic event gave locals and foreigners the opportunity to remember or discover images of the place in days gone by.

“Mechanics 1978-2006”

“Mechanics 1978-2006”, an exhibition by renowned sculptor Giannis Parmakelis, took place in the summer of 2006. Through approximately forty sculptures, mostly monumental in size, this rule-breaking, inquisitive sculptor revealed the wealth of his artistic achievements over the last 28 years.

“Chilean Art travels to Crete”

In the summer of 1999, Minos Beach art hotel welcomed Chilean art to its gardens and interiors. The exhibition, entitled “Chilean Art travels to Crete”, brought eight artists to Agios Nikolaos in a collage of sculpture, painting, photography, theatre, poetry and song.

Riches of Cyprus

In the summer of 1996, an exhibition of Cypriot artists entitled “Riches of Cyprus” was held at the Minos Beach art hotel. Its purpose was to make new conceptual connections between two iconic islands representing the south-eastern edges of the Greek world.
