It was a great success for the three-day festival blueFest Crete18 | Culture & Beyond held from 30 June to 2 July 2018 in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.
The festival was organized by the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation for the first time this year, overlooking one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Greece, and was organized with the cooperation and the auspices of the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos.
The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation chose to celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage with a manifold festival combining different cultural artistic activities (art, theater, music, and cinema), aiming at linking the rich cultural action and heritage of Greece with new but also traditional forms of artistic expression.
The vision for the implementation of blueFest Crete is the revival of a tradition initiated by Mrs. Gina Mamidaki, President of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation, with the organization of the 1st Art Symposium at the Minos Beach art hotel, driven by her love for the place, the arts and the pioneer idea that tourism must be a holistic, cultural experience.
1st day – Saturday, June 30th 2018
The festival kicked off on Saturday 30 June at Ammos beach, with a DJ set by Eva Boudouri (En Lefko 87,7) and the pop-up movie screening of “Mamma Mia! The Movie “, which visitors watched underneath the starlight.
2nd day – Sunday, July 1st 2018
In the morning of the second day of the festival, the We Dive We Clean volunteer team, in cooperation with the Pelagos Diving Center, dived in the sea area of the harbor of Agios Nikolaos at the invitation of the artist Georgia Kotretsos, in order to clean it from polluting objects that harm the marine flora & fauna. The divers gathered over 50 kilos of plastic cans, glass bottles, packs and other plastic items.
On the afternoon of the same day, the inauguration of the exhibition “Georgia Kotretsos: 4 CENTS ON SHOW FOR 500 YEARS” was performed by Sotirios Bahtsetzis at Minos Beach art hotel.
The President of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Mrs. Gina Mamidaki welcomed the guests at the beach of the hotel and then the curator of the exhibition Sotirios Bahtsetzis presented the sculpture installation “4 Cents: On Show for 500 Years” on the rocky surfaces Minos Beach art hotel and talked about the overall work of the artist Georgia Kotretsos and also for the part of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation collection, which is located at the Minos Beach art hotel.
With the “4 Cents: On Show for 500 Years” project, Georgia Kotretsos has a playful approach to environmental pollution issues that concern all of us, commenting on the pollution of the marine environment by plastic waste, a debate that has been at the forefront of environmental awareness issues in recent years. The 4 cents on the title of the artwork refers to the environmental fee imposed per piece for plastic bag and it is attributed to the public sector, while 500 years refers to the time that the plastic bags will remain in the sea until they are still decomposed, if we automatically stop today and on a global scale from polluting the marine environment with plastics.
In addition, the project is directly linked to the most important goals of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation, which is the promotion of the country’s cultural wealth, the empowerment of society and the restoration and protection of the environment.
This exhibition launches the Art on Blue artistic series under the care of the art historian Sotirios Bahtsetzis. These projects are specifically designed for the Minos Beach art hotel member of the bluegr Hotels & Resorts which complement and augment the existing artwork collection of the Foundation. The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation supports young artists with artist hosting programs as well as periodic group exhibitions.
Petros Klabanis presented live by the sea his latest project entitled “Rooftop Stories” where bass, loupe, percussion and voice composed an atmospheric trip from the beach of the Minos Beach art hotel to the terraces of the artist’s favorite cities and re-introduced to us his favorite songs through his own distinct look. The lighting of the show was edited by Semina Papalexandroupoulou.
The day was finished with a cocktail party with the sounds of the musical choices by Sakis Tsitomenas (En Lefko 87,7).
3rd day – Monday, July 2nd 2018
The festival’s curtain fell on Monday July 2 with the theatrical play “Socrates Now” by Yannis Simonides at the Minos Beach art hotel and the simultaneous second screening of the movie “Mamma Mia! The Movie » at Candia Park Village.
Yannis Simonidis, the award-winning EMMY actor, director and creator of the show, presented to the public the classic text of “Socrates Apology” in a multilevel political, cultural and entertainment experience, with a unique immediacy that highlighted Socrates’s sharp logic and perceptions. The 90-minute monologue of Socrates followed a discussion and an exchange of views with the audience, an integral part of the performance of Simonides.
At the same time, the small visitors of the Candia Park village enjoyed the summer rhythms of the Mama Mia movie on the beach of the hotel with an ice cream cone…. as the old days.
The exhibition “Georgia Kotretsos: 4 CENTS: ON SHOW FOR 500 YEARS” and the Open Museum will be open to the public by the end of October.
