1st Art Symposium

1st Art Symposium

Launching a new institution

The first Art Symposium was held in June 1988 in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, at the Minos Beach Art Hotel. Thirty-two artists and five speakers from Europe, Greece and the United States met in a public arena, working and creating together in an exclusive landscape of sand and rocks, greenery and trees, ideal for a modern sculpture park.

These surroundings inspired the creation of works characterised by the variety and plurality of their aesthetic approaches.   The creators, with different interests, orbits and leanings, from different cultural and educational backgrounds and belonging to different generations of the 20th century, forged synergies and partnerships that gave a representative and revealing view of current artistic concerns.

Their works, whether geometric, expressionist or naturalistic, whether freestanding, hung, mounted or combined with natural or man-made structures, became part of the natural environment of the hotel, lending an additional intellectual and artistic dimension to every step taken by its guests.
